First resource provision quality assurance review well received
Following feedback on the first pilot peer-on-peer quality assurance review of a primary school resource provision, SEND sub-group members suggested how the review process could be improved when it is rolled out to all schools with resource provisions from September 2022. At their meeting of 25th April 2022, they learnt that the review had been extremely valuable and had felt like a non-judgemental piece of partnership working between the reviewers and school staff. The contents of the subsequent report had been agreed before it was written. Members suggested that the review could be improved by sharing more contextual information about the provision and the individual children within it at the beginning of the visit and by including other professionals, such as occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, in the reviewing team. A secondary school would be next to pilot the process.
Next members learnt how the annual review process for EHC plans is likely to change following the SEND consultation. There would be national templates and training for schools and health professional would be standardised. Although this would involve a lot of work initially, it would be easier in the long run and would help colleges, in particular, which take students from as many as 14 different boroughs.
Members also learnt that the Local Authority had recruited a Quality Assurance Officer who would be working on updating the SEN Pupil Voice toolkit as part of their remit from September.
