Fact finding visit to Hackney Learning Trust
As part of the Inclusion sub-group’s learning journey around reducing permanent exclusions, Lauren Ovenden and Liz Bedwin visited the Hackney Learning Trust, which refreshed its No Need to Exclude strategy in 2017.
They fed back to the Inclusion sub-group on 10th December 2018 that it had been a long term project for Hackney (initial publication 2013) which had involved conversations with all schools with transparency around the objective. Clear processes had been set up that schools follow when a child is at risk of exclusion and honest and respectful conversations are carried out after an exclusion to see whether anything could have been done differently.
Hackney’s permanent exclusions are static year-on-year, in the context of rising rates nationally.
