Bexley approved by DfE to establish a Special Free School

Bexley’s expression of interest/bid to establish a Special Free School has been approved by the Department for Education to proceed to the next stage.  Bexley is one of 37 local authorities to have had their bid approved and one of only five authorities in and around London.

The school will be for secondary-aged pupils with complex needs of SEMH and high functioning ASD, who are currently being placed in out of borough independent specialist provisions.  This is in line with Bexley’s desire to see that its children and young people are educated in their local communities wherever possible.

There will be a meeting for any trust interested in applying to establish the new school at 10am – 12:30pm on 23rd April 2019 at the Council Chambers, Civic Offices, Watling Street, Bexleyheath DA6 7AT.  To register your interest, please email Kevin Taylor, Head of School Place Planning, Commissioning, Admissions, Major Projects, Transport and Facilities Management at kevin.taylor@bexley.gov.uk

The local authority still has consultation work to carry out around the proposed site and the final decision to open any free school depends on the Secretary of State formally entering into a funding agreement with the academy trust.
